Dollard-des-Ormeaux that is also named D.D.O. or Dollard is a town located on the Island of Montreal, Quebec. The town got its name in honour of Adam Dollard des Ormeaux who was a martyr in France. Dollard-des-Ormeaux was the part of Montreal city for some time, but in 2006 the local residents decided to separate D.D.O. out to form the independent administrative unit. In 2001 Quebec Official Toponymy Commission set the new spelling of the city’s name. The correct variant is Dollard-Des Ormeaux with one hyphen between first two parts and a space before the last part. But such a spelling didn’t become popular among locals, so it is used only in official documents. Even the official city’s website writes Dollard-des-Ormeaux. History of Dollard-des-Ormeaux Remote Past The territory of the future Dollard-des-Ormeaux city originally belonged to the Parish of St-Joachim de Pointe-Claire (since 1714).

Then it was separated from Pointe-Claire and joined to the lands of the Parish of Ste-Geneviève in 1845. In 1924, July 29 the territory of Dollard-des-Ormeaux became a separate municipality. It was separated from the Parish of Ste-Geneviève after the Parish decided to set a tax for road reconstructions at Gouin Boulevard. After Dollard-des-Ormeaux became a separate town, the first mayor was elected. This was Hormidas Meloche. Then lots of streets of the Sunnydale neighbourhood were named in honour of Zunenshine family members. This family owned Belcourt. The streets got the names of ‘Sunshine’, ‘Hyman’, etc. Dollard-des-Ormeaux is mostly a residential community. However it has a number of commercial zones used for different kinds of business. One of its main commercial centres was the Town Hall where the most of city services were located.
